Tennis Elbow

The tennis courts are calling your name, and you can’t answer. Why? Pain on the outside of your elbow is holding you back from a game that’s near and dear to your heart. Tennis Elbow, also known as lateral epicondylar tendinopathy, is caused by overuse and is most commonly seen in tennis and racquetball players. With repetitive motions, the tendons that join the forearm muscles on the outside of the elbow become inflamed. The most common symptoms include pain and tenderness around the outside of the elbow.

Does It Really Work?

In 2013, Sage Journals published Efficacy of Platelet-Rich Plasma for Chronic Tennis Elbow, proving that PRP lends long-term pain relief. The study consisted of 230 participants who dealt with symptoms for at least three months and failed with conventional treatments. The participants were split into two groups labeled PRP (116) and control (114). Each participant was evaluated 12 and 24 weeks post-procedure to track pain levels. At the 12 week post-procedure mark, the difference in pain relief between the two groups was minimal. However, there was a significant change after 24 weeks. The PRP group reported 71.5% pain improvement compared to the 56.1% in the control group. With an 83% success rate, this study confirms that Tennis Elbow can be effectively treated by orthobiologic treatments.
